9-year-old injured Friday night in shooting in Independence

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A 9-year-old girl was seriously injured after being shot in a rolling gun battle Friday night along U.S. 40 in Independence.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. near V’s Italiano Ristorante, which is located a block west of Sterling Avenue on U.S. 40 in Independence.

The child, who was riding in one of the vehicles involved in the exchange of gunfire, was dropped off at a Walmart less than a mile away along U.S. 40 at the site of the former Blue Ridge Mall, where Kansas City, Missouri, police responded to a reported shooting.

Police have found more than 30 shell casings at the Independence scene.

Surveillance video from the restaurant shows two vehicles, a car and an SUV, exchanging gunfire on the highway and pulling into the V's parking lot.

At least three vehicles in the parking lot were struck by gunfire. No one in the restaurant was injured.
