KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A barrage of bullets sent a crowd of unsuspecting mourners ducking for cover Friday.
Kansas City, Kan. Police responded at 10:40 a.m. to the Greater Pentecostal Temple at 864 Splitlog Avenue.
Bishop Marvin Donaldson, the church's pastor, watched mourners scatter from his second-floor office. He told 41 Action News he observed a second shooter moving into position.
"Another car came down this way and it shot the hearse that was carrying the casket," Bishop Donaldson said.
One of the bullets struck a man. People rushed to his aid after the shooting. Police said he suffered minor injuries.
Watch surveillance video of the shooting:
The gunfire also pierced a utility box, the church's sign and the pastor's car twice, blowing out one of his tires.
As of Friday night, investigators don't know what triggered the shooting.
Despite the chaos, the 11:30 a.m. service for 43-year-old Christine Mays went on.
"At one moment we thought we might have to cancel the service because we didn't know whether they were going to come back," Donaldson said.
He adds this is the first time in the church's 42-years that they've experienced a shooting.
"It disturbed me," Donaldson said. "When we young, we would never--we respected--God's house wherever it was."
Police request anyone with information to call KCK Police or the Greater Kansas City TIPS Hotline, 816-474-TIPS(8477).
