KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Olathe man was sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison for killing his girlfriend’s father in Overland Park in 2018.

A Johnson County judge on Thursday sentenced Elijah King, 22, to 119 months in custody and ordered restitution in the amount of $25,000, District Attorney Steve Howe said.

King pleaded guilty in August to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the April 10, 2018, death of 52-year-old David Slater.

Police said King shot Slater, who was his girlfriend’s father, during an argument at a home near 83rd and Switzer streets while visiting his girlfriend with his 6-year-old daughter, who also was shot in the leg.

King also pleaded guilty to a charge of trafficking contraband in the Johnson County Detention Center.
