Extreme heat in KC serves as reminder to never leave child in hot car

Posted

So far 12 children have died this year from being left in a hot vehicle, and advocates say it's time for a change.

Cars can act like a greenhouse, trapping heat, and 80 percent of the increase in temperature happens in the first 10 minutes.

With a dozen deaths so far this year, experts say that is a 240 percent increase in deaths from this time last year.

In this kind of heat, the deadly effects can start taking place immediately. But experts say despite all the warnings and the tips, it's time for technology to step in.

"The truth of the matter is, we need technology. There has to be some type of alert to prevent children from being left in cars because parents can hear this on the news every day and they still don't think it can happen to them,” Amber Andreasen, a spokeswoman with kidsandcars.org, said.

She adds that you should leave your left shoe in the back seat, which forces you to always open the back door to check to see if your child is there.
