HOUSTON, Tex. — In one northeast Houston neighborhood, families lined up Saturday morning waiting for help. They were waiting for basic needs from food or cleaning supplies to medical help more than a month after Hurricane Harvey.
Heart to Heart International, based in Lenexa, has been in the area since August after the storm hit. On Saturday, they gave medical screenings and some vaccinations at the outreach event in northeast Houston. They have been supporting three free clinics in Texas with volunteer doctors, nurses, and staff. They also go to FEMA sites, food pantries, and other outreach events in the community because they want to make sure people who can’t get to the free clinics have access to medical help.
“You assume things are back to normal,” said Paul Kramer. The doctor from Kansas City got to Texas last week. “But really people lost their modes of transportation, their incomes, their jobs.”
“There is still definitely a need,” said Heather Lee. The Heart to Heart International volunteer and lead of the group’s Texas team has been here since late August. “We’ve encountered a lot of people with upper respiratory infections because the mold is such a problem. When you walk through these neighborhoods, you can feel the air is different.”
Lee said Heart to Heart International will have teams in the area for several more weeks, possibly into December.
