BELTON, Mo. — The Belton Police Department is trying to find the person or persons responsible for vandalizing the Mayor’s Christmas tree.

Police say the vandalism happened Friday night. The lights were ripped off the tree and the ornaments were destroyed, resulting in about $1,000 worth of damage.

The tree sits in Memorial Park just a few blocks east of City Hall.

"It does seem off to us in that there does not seem to be a purpose behind it," said. Lt. Dan Dennis. "To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever tried to vandalize the Mayor's Christmas Tree before."

So far, police have not been able to locate any surveillance video showing the theft.

Anyone with information is asked to call Belton Police at (816) 331-1500.
