KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It’s official.
Less than a day after the Kansas City, Missouri, Parks Board voted unanimously to remove the J.C. Nichols name from the iconic fountain at Mill Creek Park, the name is gone.
Despite rainy conditions, crews with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department removed a metal plaque Wednesday morning.

As part of Tuesday’s vote, the nearby J.C. Nichols Parkway will be changed back to its original designation as Mill Creek Parkway. A spokesperson for the parks department said all signage should be removed on Thursday.
No decision has yet been made on whether the street's original name will become permanent.
While the fountain will be renamed, the parks department said prioritywill return to finding a way to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the city. Those efforts were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
