KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The city of Independence said Wednesday it will extend a moratorium on utility shutoffs until Feb. 28.

A ransomware attack on the city’s computer systems in December resulted in a delay in billing and the online payment system.

Billing resumed last week, according to the city, and customers will see a 60-day cycle on their next bill. Normal billing practices will resume after January.

No credit card fees, late fees or penalties will be charged to customers. The city said it has absorbed more than $750,000 in credit card fees.

Shutoffs may resume after February, weather permitting, the city said.
