KANSAS CITY, Kan. — KCK police have removed three children from their home after one of them was found wandering looking for his mom.

Officers found the children at a home on North 55th Drive near State Avenue.

Police found the children by themselves in a first-floor apartment in what they describe as "deplorable conditions."

According to the KCKPD Chief Terry Zeigler, around 5 p.m. Thursday, a neighbor called police to report that a 4-year-old boy had knocked on their door looking for his mom.

When officers took that child home, they found two more children inside the apartment.

One of them has developmental issues. Another said they hadn't eaten in several days.

Several neighbors said the children would wander around asking for food and living in filth.

“If she don’t want them kids there’s something who wants those kids and sometimes it’s hard out here but you got to reach out. She must have been comfortable living like that. People don’t live like that unless they’re comfortable like that,” Joanice Walker, a neighbor said.

DCF is now investigating this incident.
