KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City, Missouri, police said Wednesday that evidence gathered from its investigation does not support the claims of an off-duty officer who said he shot an intruder in his home last week.

The officer had called for help around 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 9, saying he had fired shots at an intruder inside his home in the 3500 block of St. John Avenue. The off-duty officer said the intruder had fled the scene.

The suspected intruder was not located after the incident, because the story was made up, according to KCPD.

“Police have investigated the shooting, and the evidence does not support the off-duty officer’s claim that there was an intruder in his home,” KCPD spokesman Sgt. Jake Becchina said in an email Wednesday.

The officer, a 20-year veteran, has “voluntarily separated” from the department, Becchina said.

The investigation is ongoing and the case will be forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office for consideration of possible charges. No charges have been filed as of Wednesday afternoon.
