PODCAST: Westport grapples with solutions to security measures

Posted

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The fallout from this past weekend’s shooting in Westport continues to fill in the nooks and crannies of the entertainment district.

In this week’s 41 Files podcast (kshb.com/41files), reporter Cat Reid details the frustrations that the Westport Business League has had in finalizing security measures that would have led to increased screening for weapons during weekend evenings.

Vice President Mike Pence visited Kansas City Wednesday for a fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder (R – Kansas) and to plug President Trump’s tax policies. Reporter Steven Dial offered a report from the event and why Congressman Yoder wasn’t able to attend Pence’s fundraiser for him.

But we started this week with reporter Sarah Plake. Sarah’s covered the death this week of UMKC student and India native Sharath Koppu.

Koppu was killed in a business robbery gone bad last Friday night at 54th and Prospect.

Police don’t believe his death was a hate crime, but it’s the second high profile death of an Indian native in Kansas City following the Olathe bar shooting murder of Srinivas Kuchibhotla in 2017, and it begs the question of Kansas City’s perception of safety.
