Rundown area of Shawnee could get facelift worth $113 million

SHAWNEE, Kan. – A run-down strip mall in Shawnee could soon get a facelift.

Developers want to bring in new retail and apartments to the northeast corner of 75th Street & Quivira.

The area started going downhill several years ago with stores closing one by one. The developer, MP Westbrook North, is proposing a $113 million-dollar project.

They are requesting $25 million from the city, through Tax Increment Financing (TIF) and establishing a Community Improvement District (CID).

There are only a few businesses in the area now.

The owner of Mi Pueblito, a Hispanic grocery store, said business is picking up, and thinks the development will be good.

Alonzo Villasenor said he hopes they can stay where they are.

The store is on a 10-year lease. Shawnee City Council is holding public hearings on Nov. 1 and 13 to determine whether to establish the area as a Redevelopment District.

If the plan goes through, it'll take three years to complete.
