KANSAS CITY, Mo. - It's the party that brings everyone together in Kansas City, Sly's Rock the Block and people were enjoying every minute.
"It's a good family atmosphere. It's great what the mayor is putting on. Just to come out here and have a good time," said Brandon Shockley, who was there with his wife and two kids.
This block party used to be held later in the day in past years. But, due to a few fights, the mayor decided it needed to be eariler to keep people safe.
Violence has been a hot topic in Kansas City. The mayor addressed the city about it last week. He had this important message: "We have not come to grips with the root causes of this issue and until we do we are going to continue to have it. We can not alleviate violence when you have so many people that have no hope."
This is a topic we will continue to talk about.
"We have to dig a lot deeper than simply saying the mayor is not doing anything and the city is not doing anything. This is a city wide issue. It's a country wide issue," said Mayor Sly James.
The mayor just hoped this event could put a smile on faces and bring families together.
Mayor Sly James did tweet at the rapper, Drake, who is performing on Sunday at the Sprint Center to come on by. But, he was a no show.
