Stolen car recovered using plate scanner in KCMO

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two weeks ago, Maria Canant’s Chevrolet Malibu was stolen right out of her driveway in Overland Park.

On Wednesday night, she received a call she never expected.

"They found it last night in Kansas City,” said Canant.

Canant says her insurance investigator found the stolen vehicle off of Askew and 29th.

The investigator told Canant the license plate on the car had been picked up by a nearby scanner.

"It was a scanner that was on light pole structures,” said Canant.

The plate then popped up on a database of stolen vehicles available to the insurance company.

"He went to drive around the neighborhood and found my car the next day, parked in front of a home,” said Canant.

Thursday, Canant was able to get her car back, just when she and her husband had given up.

"We were actually in the process of purchasing a new car today,” said Canant.

The vehicle needs a good cleaning.

"It smells like smoke... there's glitter purple nail polish all over the inside so I'll work on getting that cleaned up,” said Canant.

But for the most part, the car is in good shape. To Canant’s surprise, it has almost all of her belongings still inside.

"Brand new clothes, $300 car seat, didn't sell anything just took it out and put it in the back,” said Canant.

Canant said she was told by police that a suspect is in custody, and it was likely stolen simply because that person doesn’t have a car of their own.

"If they stole my vehicle they are known for just using it because they don't have one to drive so they steal ones when they can," said Canant.
