KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Aside from doing homework and hanging out with friends, a 17-year-old Rockhurst High School student will be running for governor of Kansas over the next year.

Dominic Scavuzzo made the announcement after consulting with his parents, who obviously were surprised with his idea. But Scavuzzo is now one of four teens running for governor in Kansas.

“I told my mom at first and she was like, ‘Are you crazy?’” he explained.

Ever since his early childhood, Scavuzzo has had an interest in politics.

In an interview with 41 Action News, Scavuzzo remembered watching debates, speeches, and political coverage over the years.

“My whole life, I've kind of been interested in politics,” he explained. “At a young age, I'd find myself watching CNN and wanting to be caught up with politics."

The decision to run for governor came after he was able to travel to Washington, D.C. for the presidential inauguration this year and after he attended a Boys State leadership program at Kansas State over the summer.

After interacting with other teens from around Kansas, Scavuzzo wanted to dive into the political world.

“People want to see change,” he explained. “I think if we can get a younger point of view in our state, it could really help."

Kansas does not have an age requirement for candidates running in the governor’s race.

While people may view teenage candidates differently, Scavuzzo said it is important to hear from young voices.

“If someone is willing to do the work, willing to help their state, help their community, I don't see why not (to allow teenage candidates),“ he explained.

Ed Scavuzzo, Dominic’s father, will work as treasurer of the campaign.

On Friday, Ed said he was excited to see what his son would do.

“He's always been the kind of kid to jump into stuff 100 percent and he's very bright hardworking kid,” Ed explained. “We love him and we will support whatever he wants to do."

For now, Dominic plans to campaign across the state during available weekends over the next few months.

“On some weekends, some school breaks, I do want to go around the state and meet some people and spread my youthful message,” he explained.

Scavuzzo said he looked forward to talking with voters about important state issues, including school funding.

“I have a sister who teaches in Kansas,” he explained. “I hear frequently her concerns with the budget. Its something both young and old in Kansas want to see happen."

Moving forward, he remained excited for the experience ahead.

“I do believe that my message is strong,” he explained. “I do believe that I mean good for Kansas."

Three other teenagers have declared their candidacy in the Kansas governor’s race, including Prairie Village teen Tyler Ruzich.

The deadline to file for the race is June 1st, 2018.
