Church prepares for Kansas City, Kansas detective's visitation
"We’ll provide hope and support and spiritual nurturing," said the Rev. Ron Holland of Trinity Community Church.
This is the same church that in 1998 served as a final stop for Sgt. Richard Asten, the last member of the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department killed in the line of duty.
This time, Holland's son, Mark, pastor of Trinity Community and the city’s mayor, will officiate at Saturday’s funeral.
"He will be dealing with his own grief and shocked and then he will be plugging that in with his experience of what it means with a family to have a tragic occurrence like this," Ron Holland said.
Ten miles away in Kansas City, North at Cumpy’s, machines stitched together tribute hats to honor Lancaster. Owner Andrew Romano says he made the cap after many requests.
"I mean, this is a small gesture, but if I can help Detective Lancaster’s family, his wife, his kids, I have young kids myself, so I really understand and it kind of hit home," Romano said.
"It is a community grief you will hear that, you’ll hear that all throughout this community about how hard this is on the very folk who are the fabric of this community," Ron Holland said.
