Details on Missouri's school supply sales tax holiday

Missouri’s Back to School Sales Tax Holiday began Friday morning.

From 12:01 a.m. Friday until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, certain back-to-school items can be purchased with no sales tax.

Items include clothing, school supplies, computer software, personal computers and computer peripheral devices.

Clothing items may not exceed $100 in taxable value and can include apparel or footwear. Items such as watches, watchbands, jewelry, handbags, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, scarves, ties, headbands or belt buckles are not included in the sales tax holiday.

School supplies include any item any item normally used by students in a standard classroom for educational purposes, including but not limited to, textbooks, notebooks, paper, writing instruments, crayons, art supplies, rulers, book bags, backpacks, handheld calculators, chalk, maps, and globes. Tax-exempt purchases may not exceed $50.

Personal computers can include a laptop, desktop, tower computer system or tablets and devices designed for use in conjunction with a personal computer. Tax-exempt items may not exceed $3,5000 in taxable value.

Some cities, counties and districts have elected not to take part in the holiday.

Cities that have opted out include North Kansas City, Riverside, Sedalia, Smithville, Chillicothe and Claycomo.

Ray and Henry counties have opted out of the holiday.

Individual districts that have opted out of the holiday include the Independence Events Center Community Improvement District and the Highway 71/291 Partners in Progress Transportation Development District.
