ORIGINAL STORY | Only five games into the 2020 season, the Kansas City Chiefs can practically lock up a record-tying fifth straight AFC West championship Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs are 4-0 and own a two-game lead over the Las Vegas Raiders, who at 2-2 are KC’s closest competition in the division at the moment.

Both the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos are 1-3 on the season.

A three-game lead with 11 games to play — we hope, at least, but more on that later — doesn’t lock up the AFC West crown mathematically, but it’s hard to see the Chiefs faltering enough to be threatened as our "4th & 1" podcast co-hosts Tod Palmer and Nick Jacobs explain.

The Chiefs’ offense will need to execute better than it did Monday against New England, when it failed to reach the end zone until the final minute of the third quarter, but Mahomes won’t be facing a Bill Belichick defense.

That should help, though Mahomes still expects a tough test from Las Vegas.

It’s also hard to know how much the game’s status being in flux — and ultimately postponed — after players for the Chiefs and Patriots tested positive last weekend affected pregame focus and preparation.

Either way, it’s the new status quo in the NFL, which is having to move games like checker pieces amid the Tennessee Titans’ outbreak and New England’s positive tests.

The Chiefs’ scheduled game Thursday at the Buffalo Bills likely will be pushed back to Sunday if the Titans-Bills play as scheduled Tuesday.

But first, it’s Raiders week.

Kansas City’s defense, which has been shorthanded during several games at cornerback, gets a boost with Bashaud Breeland’s return from a four-game suspension.

Breeland — who started 18 games, including the playoffs, last season for the Super Bowl LIV champs — said he’s ready to contribute right away.

The Chiefs will be without rookie defensive lineman Mike Danna, who has been ruled out with a hamstring injury.

But defensive tackle Chris Jones, who sat out the New England game with a groin injury, won’t carry an injury designation into the Raiders game. No other Chiefs missed practice time last week.

Fortunately, despite cornerback Stephon Gilmore’s positive test a day after the Patriots visited Arrowhead, no Chiefs had tested positive for COVID-19 since that game as of Friday night.

But plenty was made of Mahomes’ postgame encounter with Gilmore. The Chiefs’ QB explained why COVID-19 is always on his mind these days.

Wide receiver Tyreek Hill also laid out some of his COVID-19 concerns.

On the Chiefs inactives list this week:

  • RB DeAndre Washington
  • OL Yasir Durant
  • TE Ricky Seals-Jones
  • DE Demone Harris
  • LB Darius Harris

Raiders inactives:

  • S Dallin Leavitt
  • OT Brandon Parker
  • OG Patrick Omameh
  • WR Bryan Edwards
  • DT Maliek Collins

Tickets for the first two games in November, which will remain capped at 22% capacity amid the pandemic, will go on sale next week to season ticket members.
