10:22 p.m. | The Chiefs trounced the Texans 34-20 to open the 2020 season behind three touchdowns from Patrick Mahomes and a scintillating debut by rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

9:58 p.m. | The Texans get a touchdown, but fail on the two-point conversion. The Chiefs run of 31 unanswered points is over, but the good guys still lead 31-13 with 7:15 remaining.

9:45 p.m. | Kansas City cashes in on the turnover when Patrick Mahomes connects with Tyreek Hill for his third touchdown pass of the game. The Chiefs are steamrolling the Texans 31-7 on the opening night of the 2020 NFL season.

9:36 p.m. | Deshaun Watson floated an errant pass under pressure from Tyrann Mathieu. Rookie cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, who started in place of suspended starting corner Bashaud Breeland, intercepted the pass and returned it to the Texans' 15-yard line.

9:31 p.m. | The Chiefs have lost another defensive player after cornerback Charvarius Ward left the game with a hand injury. He will not return.

Kansas City already was down a starting corner with Bashaud Breeland suspended for the first four games.

Rookie L'Jarius Sneed started in Breeland's place, while second-year corner Rashad Fenton replaced Ward.

9:30 p.m. | The reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs lead the Texans 24-7 entering the fourth quarter.

9:21 p.m. | The Chiefs are down a second defensive lineman after Alex Okafor suffered a hamstring injury. He will not return.

9:10 p.m. | Clyde Edwards-Helaire continued to astound. The much-hyped rookie running back capped a 75-yard drive to open the third quarter with a 27-yard touchdown run, his first career TD.

The first-round pick from LSU now has 102 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries and Kansas City leads 24-7.

8:30 p.m. | For the second time tonight, the Chiefs have had a touchdown overturned on review.

8:27 p.m. | After featuring rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire for much of the drive, the Chiefs take their first lead on Patrick Mahomes' 10-yard touchdown pass to Sammy Watkins with 3:25 remaining before halftime.

Edwards-Helaire had five carries for 40 yards on the 14-play, 91-yard drive.

7:54 p.m. | David Johnson, who was part of an offseason trade that sent DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals, scores on an 19-yard run as the Texans jump in front 7-0 with less than 5 minutes remaining in the first quarter.

7:52 p.m. | Second-year Chiefs defensive tackle Khalen Sanders heads to the locker room with an arm injury.

7:40 p.m. | The Chiefs' touchdown is overturned, because Demarcus Robinson didn't maintain control as he hit the ground, so the game remains scoreless.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Demarcus Robinson loses control of the ball in the end zone against the Houston Texans in the first half of an NFL football game Thursday, Sept. 10, 2020, in Kansas City, Mo. The play was ruled an incomplete pass.

7:28 p.m. | The 2020 NFL season started with a Harrison Butker touchback. The Chiefs will start on defense.

7:25 p.m. | Players from both the Chiefs and Texans came together at midfield, locking arms together and hugging in some cases, for "a moment of silence dedicated to the ongoing fight for equality in our country."

The gesture was met with boos from some in the crowd, which was capped at 22% capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson, who signed the largest contracts in NFL history during the offseason, locked arms in a rare pregame show of unity.

7:21 p.m. | During the national anthem, the Chiefs stood on their sideline. Most players locked arms, but defensive end Alex Okafor chose to take a knee with a right fist raised.

The Texans stayed in the locker room for the national anthem.

7:14 p.m. | Chiefs CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt proclaimed the Lombardi Trophy from Super Bowl LIV as belonging to Chiefs Kingdom during an on-field ceremony after a video introduction by Norma Hunt, Clark's mother and the widow of Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt.

Standing in front on a 20-foot tall Lombardi Trophy, Clark Hunt then unveiled a new "Super Bowl Champions" banner atop the south edge of Arrowhead Stadium.

7 p.m. | How will the Chiefs fare during the 2020 season? Tod Palmer offers his thoughts on the 16-game schedule with a game-by-game look at the 2020 schedule.

6:56 p.m. | The Chiefs stood in an end zone with locked arms as a video of Alicia Keys singing "Lifting Every Voice and Sing," which also detailed the history of racism in the U.S., played inside the stadium.

3:30 p.m. | Right on time, Arrowhead Stadium staff have opened up the gates to the parking lots, letting the first wave of Kansas City Chiefs fans through.

11:15 a.m. | Players and coaches of both the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans will have the opportunity to join the effort to highlight social justice and police reform efforts as part of tonight's game.

In addition to league efforts that include messages painted on the field, players will also be able to wear decals on their helmets to honor victims of racism and police violence, according to a CNN article published earlier this summer.

UPDATE, 9:15 a.m. | There's no reason to believe that rain will have an impact on the Chiefs air attack in tonight's game, but the weather is throwing a wrench in other plans.

Officials at Whiteman Air Force Base said Thursday morning that low cloud cover and poor visibility have forced the cancellation of the flyover B-2 stealth bomber before tonight's game. - SH

Of course, Edwards-Helaire isn’t the only rookie expected to make an immediate impact: Meet speedy linebacker Willie Gay Jr., the Chiefs’ second-round pick in the 2020 draft.

Analysis

If analysis is more your thing, don’t miss Nick Jacobs’ breakdown of the Chiefs’ 53-man roster, a must-read in a season with no preseason games by which to judge players.

Mick Shaffer also has the skinny on what kept the Chiefs’ coordinators up at night this week.

If you’re wondering who might be a breakout player for the 2020 Chiefs? Here are some candidates.

Tod Palmer also weighs in on some players who need to have big seasons for the Chiefs to have a chance at repeating as Super Bowl champs.

Feature content

Mahomes, who got engaged if you hadn’t heard and also got his own bling, also is doing things in the community with his 15 and the Mahomies Foundation and around social justice.

And it’s a community, including this adorable 3-year-old, who is crazy for the Chiefs these days.

Game day

The game day experience at Arrowhead will be undoubtedly different amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Chiefs still have a major home-field advantage in one respect.

Up in the sky: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Yes, it’s a really expensive B2 stealth bomber performing a flyover.
