The Missouri Department of Transportation will close 210 Highway under I-435 for bridge demolition work this weekend.
The highway will close between the ramp to southbound I-435 and Randolph Road starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, June 2. Westbound travelers can take Randolph Road north to Parvin to get on I-435. Eastbound travelers can still use the southbound I-435 ramp, but will need to turn around at Front Street to go northbound on the interstate. The highway will reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday.
Crews will close the ramp from eastbound 210 Highway to northbound I-435 starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, June 2, and it will reopen on August 4 (in two months) for ramp reconstruction work.
MoDOT will also reduce northbound lanes of I-435 to one lane between Front Street and 210 Highway starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 2, and it will reopen at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
This is all part of a project that will create a new Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at I-435 and 210 Highway in the Northland.
The interchange serves 100,000 vehicles each day with the majority of those vehicles being large trucks.
"Everything around us is some kind of trucking or construction company," said Shannon Hall, Construction Inspector for MoDOT. "The Ford plant isn't too far away, we've got the quarry over here, we've got all sorts of companies over here that utilize trucks. It's hard on the roads."
Hall said it also contributes to a rush hour mess.
"Traffic on 210 backs up as far as the eye can see," said Hall. "It's really hard to get through all the signals, that's why this diverging diamond will help because it gets free flowing traffic through and free left turns onto the ramp."
MoDOT has already permanently closed the ramp from eastbound 210 Highway to southbound I-435 further west of the interchange. It plans to demolish the flyover ramp from northbound I-435 to westbound 210 Highway as well. MoDOT will also be adding a lane to I-435 over 210 Highway so it'll be three lanes all the way through.
Construct closures: (All subject to change)
- May 4 to June 1: ramp from WB 210 hwy to NB I-435 remains closed
- May 17-25: ramp from EB 210 Hwy to SB I-435 (closest to the interchange) will close
- May 22: ramp from EB 210 hwy to SB I-435 (further from interchange) will close permanently -- Use ramp closer to interchange
- End of May: The Great Midwest Drive intersection will reopen (weather dependent) This intersection will be signalized (traffic signals).
- June 1: Crews will shift traffic on 210 hwy through the interchange. Vehicles will be pushed to the outside of the roadway so crews can begin work on the center portion of the DDI. Two lanes in each direction on Route 210 will remain open during the morning and afternoon rush hours.
- June 2-4: 210 Hwy completely closed for bridge demolition
The interchange is scheduled to be complete in December 2018.
