Good morning bloggers,

There were a lot of school closings due to the frigid temperatures and slick conditions this morning. We did end up having the "flash freeze" that we predicted would happen around 10 PM last night. The temperatures crashed from 33° to 3° overnight!

By 8 AM, it had warmed up to 4 degrees with a wind chill of around 15 below. KCI Airport officially recorded 3.1" of snow. I measured 2.0" on the Plaza, and amounts varied from around 1" to 4" across the area, which was what we predicted a few days ago. In fact, this storm was predicted 55 days ago to happen around February 12th, using the LRC. The weather pattern is cycling regularly, and for 20 years now, we have been using the LRC to make these predictions far in advance. This years cycle is close to 60 days long. What happened 60 days ago? Do you remember the Chiefs/Broncos game at Arrowhead stadium, the snow game? KCI had 3.5" of snow that day, and 3.1" right on schedule yesterday! When this part of the pattern returns in April, it may snow again, but more likely there will be a big severe weather outbreak, and we will be preparing you for severe weather season soon. The 3.1" of snow put us up to 17.1 inches for the season:

There is no snow in the forecast through the weekend. A big warming trend will begin on Friday, and this warming trend will happen after another 24 hours of frigid temperatures. It may drop to near 0° tonight before that warming trend begins. Expect temperatures to warm into the 40s and possibly 50s Saturday into Sunday. Another storm is being monitored closely for Early to mid-next week.

Kansas City Weather Timeline:

  • Today: Mostly sunny. The wind will die down by this evening. The wind will be in the 5 to 15 mph range most of the day, which provides a wind chill index of below zero until this afternoon. High: 18°
  • Tonight: Clear and frigid. Low: Near
  • Friday: Mostly sunny and warmer. South winds return with wind chills below zero early in the day. High: 29°

Have a great day, bundle up, and we will bring you KC's Most Accurate Forecast today and tonight on 41 Action News!
