and last updated

Good morning bloggers,

Northern Missouri has already had two days of snow. It has been a wild April with days with high temperatures in the 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s, and 30s. Today, we will see a range from near 70 south to 32 degrees north, all within the KC viewing area. So, if you wonder why it is difficult to forecast the weather in KC, this is another great example. Did you know that there was a research project completed that showed that KC is the most difficult city in the United States to predict the weather. We do our best, and as you know 41 Action News is the most accurate for the 13th time this year.

Take a look at Kirksville, MO earlier this morning:

This picture was tweeted from @Clippers4200, and thank you for sharing this with us. Look at the snowfall forecast from our latest model:

How much snow is this? Look closely, and those are 1 foot pockets. ONE FOOT of snow is not out of the question near the Iowa border by early tomorrow morning. Farther south, there is even a slight chance of a little dusting near KC by morning. It will depend on if the temperatures drop a bit faster around midnight tonight. We will be monitoring this closely.

This map above shows the set up around noon today. A surface cyclone will be sagging south across western Kansas, and then by the end of the day, a cold front will have taken over as you can see below:

The heavy snow is forecast to be hugging the Iowa border, while the cold surge is about to arrive in KC around 7 or 8 PM. A few showers and thunderstorms will be approaching the area at this time.

By 9 PM, very heavy snow is likely near the Iowa border. Snowflakes may be the size of golf balls up there at times, and this would produce 3"/Hour rates of snowfall. This is how 1 foot may end up falling up there. Farther south, as the cold air rushes in, we will just have to see if it changes to snow in KC right before it ends around 3 to 5 AM tonight.

Kansas City Weather Timeline:

  • Today: Most of the day will be dry. There is a 70% chance of one or two bands of rain that will move across for around 30 minutes to an hour. Then, it will be dry again. High: 65 south of KC, around La Cygne and Clinton, and 35 north of KC, around Maryville. Winds will be variable at 10-20 mph.
  • Tonight: There is a 100% chance of snow north and rain near KC, with a 40% chance of rain farther south. The rain may change to snow before ending with under 1" possible. Low: 32°

We hope you have a great day. We will go in-depth into KC's Most Accurate Forecast on 41 Action News.
