Cirrostratus clouds helped create a super Sunday sunrise. These were caused by a weak storm system over Kansas. The main part of the storm is tracking across the southern USA where another severe weather outbreak is likely today.
This is the severe weather outlook for today. The red is the moderate category or another way to look at it, a level 4 of 5. Every day in April and May that we avoid severe weather is good.
We will be tracking a total of four storm systems this week. Let's go through this.
STORM SYSTEM #1 (TODAY): This brought us the high and mid level clouds along with a few showers and sprinkles. It is also responsible for the severe weather in the southeast USA. We will have a nice afternoon with highs 60-65 and not nearly as much as wind as we saw on Saturday.
STORM SYSTEM #2 (MONDAY): This is a small system tracking in from the northwest. It will bring scattered showers and a few thunderstorms. The timing around here is mainly during the morning into the early afternoon. It will be followed by some nice weather Monday afternoon with a light wind and highs back to 60-65.
STORM SYSTEM #3 (WEDNESDAY): The weather looks great on Tuesday in between the second and third systems. It will be sunny with a light wind as highs reach the low 60s after lows around 40. The storm system will be forming in the southwest USA.
This third system will move through on Wednesday bringing the chance of widespread rain and a few thunderstorms. There are three things to notice. One, there is no snow with this storm which is a sure sign spring is trying to get the upper hand on winter. Two, we are on the northern side of the storm, the cooler side, which means little to no chance of severe weather. Unfortunately, the south may see more severe weather. Third, the storm system has a chance to track farther south. If this happens, we will see just a few showers. Temperatures in the rain will be in the 50s.
STORM SYSTEM #4 (FRIDAY): The third system exits Wednesday night making for a decent Thursday. Highs will be in the 60s. The fourth storm system will be arriving from the Rockies. It will bring a good chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday. The severe threat is low again as there will not be enough warmth and humidity to work with. Again, the south will have a chance of severe weather where it is warmer and more humid. Next weekend is looking decent with warmer air returning next Sunday.
RAINFALL FORECAST THE NEXT 7 DAYS: This is the percentage average rainfall during the last 30 days. We are at 119% of average. Central and western Kansas are just 25% to 65% of average. The hard red winter wheat crop needs some water out there in western Kansas as this is prime growing time. It is too early to tell if the late freezes had an impact. It is not nearly as wet as it was last year. So, we do not expect the crazy flooding we saw in 2019.
The rainfall forecast the next 7 days would be great news for the western Kansas wheat as 1" to 3" of rain is possible. Our area could see 1"-2" north to 2"-3" south. Now, if the Wednesday storm system tracks farther south, we will see .25" to 1" of rain north to 1" to 2" south the next 7 days.
