Good morning bloggers,

Yesterday we talked about this blocking pattern developing over northern Canada and Greenland. I will continue this discussion today, as it appears there will be some impacts on our weather within the next seven days. But, let's begin with the forecast for the AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium.

Surface Forecast Valid Sunday

A series of storm systems will begin affecting our area this weekend. The NFC Championship game in Green Bay appears to be in a snowy zone on Sunday, and the same storm that will have some affect on our game in KC will also be producing the snow up north. Warmer air is likely going to drawn into our area early Sunday, and then as this first storm in the series moves by, a cold front will pass through as shown above.

AFC Championship Sunday Forecast In KC:

  • It will likely be cloudy and cool with a cold front moving through during the day.
  • Snow will fall across Wisconsin and parts of Iowa
  • Kansas City has a chance of a few showers on Sunday and we will continue to track the trends as this storm approaches and develops
  • Expect a wind shift to the northwest by kickoff with temperatures in the 30s for the game. The latest data has it dropping into the 20s. The winds will be out of the north and 10-20 mph

The new data is trending towards a stronger storm this weekend, and a stronger storm next week. There is a block aloft forming as you can see below. This is way up north and it has already formed, and it beginning to influence the weather pattern.

Upper Flow Valid Friday

These blocks fill up some space when they form, and it causes the flow to be force north of it and south of it. The jet stream is forced southward and the pattern gets energized a bit. This next series of storm systems is right on schedule according to the LRC, the cycling pattern. How will this impact our area?

500 milibar flow valid Championship Sunday

Here is the raw data, plotted and analyzed on this forecast for Sunday. This map above shows the block up there. It is like a big boulder in the river of air above us, and it forces the main river of air to strengthen a bit, and flow around this block. This is not a very strong block, and yet it is still there and influencing the pattern. There may be a chance of snow on Monday or Tuesday because of this.

Monday Surface Forecast

This forecast map doesn't help me much as a weather forecaster. Why? Look at that. It has snow from around downtown KC southward, and nothing just north of KC. This is the early next week storm. And, it also shows the follow up storm that would be due in mid-next week. Again, here KC is on the edge of a storm. This also shows a pretty strong developing cold blast that may be underestimated by the models. So, there is a lot to analyze as I get ready for tonight's weather forecast on 41 Action News.

Today's Big Warm Up:

Wednesday Surface Forecast

A flow from the south and southwest today will be warming us up. The pressure gradient is strengthening, so expect a good 20 mph wind today with gusts to 30 mph or stronger. This will provide the conditions for a big warm up. A cold front will move through Thursday night and then the stage will be set for the series of storm systems that may bring us some snow early next week.

  • Wednesday Forecast: Kansas City will have a sunny day with a few high clouds. High: 55°
  • Thursday Forecast: Mostly sunny with increasing clouds. High: 56°

Thank you for spending a few minutes of your day reading the Action Weather Blog, and sharing in this weather experience. Have a great Wednesday.
