Good morning bloggers,

A strange, stretched out, storm system is moving across the area today. It is producing a band of rain up and down the KS/MO state line today. If you live just 30 to 50 miles northeast or east of KC, it will likely only be a sprinkle or two, or dry today. In KC, however a quarter inch of rain is possible. Here is the rainfall forecast today:

The heaviest rainfall and highest rainfall amounts are likely south and west of downtown KC. Some of the amounts will likely exceed 0.50" of rain. The cities northeast of KC have no numbers because this model has no measurable rain.

Will it snow tonight?

The map above shows the precipitation types valid at midnight tonight. There is blue just north of KC, and this shows a small area of snow as the storm begins pulling away. We may see a brief changeover to snow and a dusting of snow is not out of the question, but that is likely the upper limit for this storm as I am expecting temperatures to remain above freezing overnight.

The current weather pattern:

This map shows a stretched out upper level trough, that I drew in with the black dashed line. At the base of this trough, in TX, is the main storm. As that intensifies tonight into tomrorrow, our rain and snow will get cut off. So, the chance of snow has until early Thursday morning to develop. As soon as that upper low closes off, our precipitation will likely taper off. This is such an unusual pattern, but fits this year's LRC. The main jet stream is stuck over Canada for now. I will argue we have not had an Arctic Blast yet this season, even though it did dip to 6 degrees one morning last month. There is a chance of an Arctic Blast right around the 20th of the month, so we are monitoring this closely.
