Good morning bloggers,

KCI Airport was forced to close this morning due to a Delta Airlines jet slipping off the runway while taxiing getting ready to take off. This is a good example of how it is out there, as it is a bit deceiving. We had freezing rain overnight and early this morning, and most treated roads seem just wet, and then suddenly you hit an untreated surface and it is a sheet of ice. So, provide a lot of extra time this morning.

KSHB-TV Meteorologist Jeff Penner took this picture of his driveway and street this morning, describing it as a this sheet of ice, a skating rink. So, there will be spots like this all around Kansas City until the temperatures rise above freezing.

By noon, temperatures will be getting close to freezing, and then by 4 or 5 PM, we may see temperatures rise above 32 degrees. This is very important, and we will be monitoring the temperatures closely.

Warmer air will move in after sunset. Yes, you heard that right, it will warm up to near 40 degrees by midnight tonight, and then a cold blast will arrive on Saturday with falling temperatuers. The good news is that it will be dry on Sunday, and sunny for tailgating. The bad news: it will be cold with temperatures between 15 and 22 degrees for the game on Sunday. Bundle up and Go Chiefs.

My Chiefs prediction is 31-17 Kansas City. A win by the Chiefs, and it would be our first Super Bowl in 50 years. Between now and then, we will keep you updated on this weather situation. Provide yourself a lot of extra time today.

Kansas City Timeline:

  • Now - noon: Below freezing with freezing rain likely. Some sleet may mix in with icing up of tree branches, and untreated surfaces. Across northern Missouri, snow will mix with sleet with accumulations below the freezing rain. Temperature staying below 32°
  • Noon - 4 PM: The freezing rain and sleet will be ending later today with temperatures rising to near of just above 32°
  • Tonight: Warming to above freezing, and then a cold blast arrives by morning.

Have a great day, and provide a lot of extra time today if you do have to get out there and travel.

Gary
