Good morning bloggers,

It is a rather interesting weather day in progress over the USA today. Tropical Storm Bertha formed near the South Carolina coast and this is already moving inland and will weaken today. Very heavy rain will be produced by this slow moving system. And, yes, this is in one of the two main tropical hot spots as we projected for this hurricane season. The Gulf of Mexico hot spot is expected to have a developing system within two weeks. Here is a look at Bertha:

While Bertha moves inland today and tonight, a broad upper low, closed off over the southern plains, will begin opening up and getting absorbed into the flow. A strong system is digging south from Canada, and it will pick up this system.

There is a series of waves rotating around this system. Kansas City is underneath the cold pool aloft, and this will likely create enough instability for a few afternoon showers and thunderstorms to form. Then, one of the disturbances rotating around the low will track west and then southwest around the cyclonic circulation. This will lead too a band of rain on Thursday morning. There is also a front developing with that northern branch system that may enhance the showers and thunderstorms a bit on Thursday.

This front will move through, ending the chance of rain for a couple of days. We are moving into early June, and we are currently in the wettest time of the year on average. More chances for thunderstorms will show up soon.

Have a great day, and let's see if any convection forms this afternoon. Convection is air that rises and sinks. The rising air, caused by the cold air aloft and the disturbances rotating around the upper level storm, will likely be strong enough to produce a few showers and thunderstorms later today.

Kansas City Weather Time-line:

  • Today: Mostly cloudy with a few breaks of sunshine. There is a 50% chance of a few showers and thunderstorms developing. Expect light winds less than 10 mph most of the day. High: 76°
  • Tonight: Mostly cloudy with an 80% chance of rain and a few thunderstorms by early morning. Low: 64°
  • Thursday: Rain likely during the morning with a chance of showers during the afternoon. A few thunderstorms are possible with heavy rain in a few spots. High: 72°
  • Friday: Mostly sunny with a north wind 10-20 mph. High: 73°
