Good late morning or early afternoon,

Thunderstorms developed around an interesting storm system that is tracking slowly across eastern and northeastern Kansas. These have not been severe thunderstorms, and we will be monitoring them closely over the next few hours. There is also a weak cold front moving our way from the north. These two things will collide with high humidity to create the conditions for thunderstorms. If you get underneath them, 3" of rain is possible.

On this first radar image from just before 11 AM, there were three areas of thunderstorms. The one in Iowa is the strongest, and that complex of thunderstorms has had some severe weather. The one near Kansas City is tracking northeast and this one has not been producing any severe weather. These have been, what we call, high based thunderstorms with bases around 8,000 to 10,000 feet above the surface, and the build up to around 30,000 feet. They have been producing heavy rain and lightning.

There will be a chance of thunderstorms with this lead disturbance, and then we will be monitoring for new development later today or tonight. There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms as you can see from this map from the Storm Prediction Center:

Let's keep our eyes to the sky. Remember, the first rule of forecasting the weather is always look outside, because you never know. Well, we are looking outside, analyzing the data, and bringing you KC's most accurate forecast.

Kansas City Weather Time-line:

  • Tuesday: A chance of morning thunderstorms. The chance of rain is 30%. Then, partly cloudy. High: 86°
