KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Good morning bloggers,

A winter storm is taking aim on Kansas City. Here are the weather headlines:

  • A Wind Advisory Today: Winds will gust to 40 mph this morning, and taper off by sunset
  • A Flash Flood Watch will go into effect tonight and Friday for areas just south and east of KC. Heavy rain is likely and some flooding is likely
  • The Winter storm approaches Kansas City on Friday: Temperatures will be dropping to below freezing by Friday night with rain changing to freezing rain, sleet, and then snow by Saturday
  • Significant amounts of snow are possible by Saturday afternoon

The storm in question is just moving into northern California this morning. There are still a lot of questions, and the track of the storm is still uncertain. A small change in the track or strength of this storm will cause a major change in how much rain and snow will fall. Right now, it appears KC Is the target.

This map above shows the storm on Saturday evening as it is pulling away from KC. If it takes this track, then snowfall amounts may be as this model shows:

This is a lot of snow with 5 to 10 inch amounts. This is the European Model snowfall forecast, and the American model snowfall forecast is similar and just a bit farther to the south.

Timing:

  • Today: Windy with a Wind Advisory in effect. The wind will gust to 40 mph at times. The high will reach 62°
  • Friday: Rain developing. A Flash Flood Watch south and east of KC
  • Friday Night-Saturday: Rain will change to freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Accumulations of 3" to 6" are possible.

This is a potentially dangerous winter storm. Go to my Facebook page and let me know if you have any questions.
