KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The active weather pattern continues for a third day this week with a slight risk for severe storms late this afternoon and evening.

Here are the five things you need to know about today’s severe weather potential:

1. A slight risk for severe weather includes areas along and north of I-70, including the Kansas City metro. The greatest chance for severe storms may be located in northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas with an isolated chance they make it to Kansas City.

2. After the morning showers, it will become warm, humid, breezy, and cloudy. This afternoon a few breaks in the clouds can’t be ruled out.

3. Storms will form in eastern Kansas near a low pressure system. The sweet spot for storms looks to be after 3 p.m. for northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri. The storms will begin as isolated, discrete supercells, potentially forming a line later in the evening sweeping through the metro area between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Most of the storms will stay north of I-70, so there’s a good chance the south side of town remains storm-free.

4. There's an isolated chance for a severe thunderstorm warning with the threats of damaging wind, large hail and/or a brief tornado.

5. Storms will clear the area between 10 p.m. and 12 a.m.

Be sure to have several ways to receive weather information, such as:

  • Listening to a weather radio. It will work even if your power goes out.
  • Listening for tornado sirens. They're meant to be heard outside, so don't rely solely on them to notify you of danger, but do take cover if you hear one.
  • Tuning in to 41 Action News. We will be on the air if anyone in the metro area is at risk.
  • Downloading the 41 Action News app for the most up-to-date, most accurate forecast, live streaming, and radar.
