I was nervous going into this film. Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Bell are two of my favorite actresses. Would this movie be as good I hoped it was? Yes. Is it the best comedy of all time? No.

The Boss is about a mega-successful woman, Michelle Darnell, played perfectly by Melissa McCarthy. She loses her business empire after going to prison for insider trading. With nowhere to turn, she shows up at her former assistant’s home (Kristen Bell) and tries to get her foot back in the door of the business world. She eventually gets roped into going to a local Girl Scouts-like meeting, only to get an idea for her next multi-million endeavor, homemade brownies.

This is the second film McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone, have done together. Falcone and McCarthy wrote the movie and Falcone directed. Their first film, Tammy, was less than good. I think their second effort was much more successful.

What I liked the most about this film is the writing. There are some really funny jokes and one-liners that had me laughing out loud. Melissa McCarthy is so good. In my opinion, she is one of the funniest women out there. She’s able to deliver jokes and pull off physical comedy. I will watch anything she is in, even if it’s not good.

That being said, this movie is not perfect. There is some cheap humor, strange storylines and ridiculous moments, but it’s all enjoyable. Peter Dinklage’s character is weird, and the whole thing with him is kind of weird, but Dinklage is very funny in this. It’s nice to see him outside of Westeros. There’s also a tiny cameo from Kathy Bates, and she is great.

Overall, this movie is not the greatest, but I really enjoyed it and laughed a lot. If you are looking for a good comedy, I recommend it.
