According to the death certificate, Parisi died by strangulation in the jail June 1.

The manner of death is listed as a homicide. The death certificate was issued on August 18.

A June death in the Clay County Jail is under investigation.

26-year-old Brian Parisi, who was being held on a drug charge, died on June 1.

Clay County Sheriff’s Spokesman Jon Bazzano said there’s an open criminal investigation in the case.

He said investigators are waiting for the final autopsy results from the medical examiner to determine whether or not criminal charges will be filed in the case.

According to Parisi's public defender Horton Lance, the Virginia native was being held at the jail on a felony drug possession charge when Parisi's father called Lance to tell him Brian had died in jail.

Court records show Parisi had a troubled past in his short life.

The Kansas City Area Crimestoppers Most Wanted List from earlier this year shows Parisi was wanted on an outstanding larceny or theft warrant in Johnson County.

Court records also show Parisi had a criminal footprint in Florida and South Carolina.

It included grand theft of a motor vehicle in 2013 in the suburban Orlando area.

That criminal history largely consists of theft charges, but nothing violent.

Parisi’s father declined to comment due to the open investigation.

The 41 Action News Investigators have also asked the Clay County Sheriff's Office for more records including whether or not there's an open internal investigation into Parisi's death.
