An Independence man was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in an October 2014 fatal shooting.
Melvin M. McCaslin, 43, was convicted by a Jackson County jury of fatally shooting Samuel Hewitt.
According to the probable cause statement, a witness claims a fight broke out between McCaslin and Hewitt. The witness said McCaslin walked up to Hewitt, who appeared to be "out cold" on the ground, and pointed something at his head. That same witness said she then heard a single gunshot.
The Jackson County Medical Examiner later ruled that Hewitt suffered from a contact-range gunshot wound to the head.
McCaslin will be sentenced on Nov. 18.
