Police say a man with hepatitis C spit into a paramedic's face and said "I have hep C and now you do too."

According to the probable cause statement filed by the Kansas City Police Department, paramedics were tying to escort Joseph Garrington, 36, into an ambulance when he broke free.

He then allegedly began banging his head on the concrete and caused a laceration on his own forehead. Police claim Garrington then spit salvia mixed with blood into the paramedic's face and stated he had hepatitis C.

Garrington later agreed to submit to a blood test and tested positive for hepatitis C.

Hepatitis C is transferred through blood and can lead to potentially fatal liver diseases. The World Health Organization says antiviral medications can cure 90 percent of people with the infection.
