KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Developers plan to turn the site of a former Kansas City school into a place for recreation, shopping and dozens of other uses.

The Kansas City Public School District announced Thursday Robeson Holding Co., LLC, a partnership between O'Reilly Development Company, LLC and South Waldo Community Investors bought the land at 8201 Holmes Road from the district.

The Jewish Community Center was built on the land, but the district later used the center for Robeson Middle School.

There are big plans for the 20-acre site.

A news release from the district states developers want to put in a recreation center with indoor and outdoor athletic spaces, a 24-hour daycare center and senior rental housing.

The South Waldo Community Investors, LLC formed in 2014 to build and run the kind of development planned for the area.

"The goal of the KCPS repurposing initiative for our closed school sites is to ensure that those properties are developed with long-term best outcome of the surrounding neighborhoods in mind,'' said Melissa Robinson, KCPS Board of Directors Chair in the news release.

The developers are working to get retailers and others involved in their plan.

No word on when the development will be finished.

This is the 18th former KCPS school site to be sold or leased in the district's re-purposing initiative, according to the news release.
