Overland Park police and the Kansas Highway Patrol plan to ramp up their presence along the construction zone on I-435 involved in a crash earlier this week.

Clarkson Construction, the company in charge of the project, is also urging motorists to slow down in the wake of the wreck.

"A lot of this has to do with speed. There are two transitions going in and out of the project," Clarkson General Manager of Operations Bob Fry said.

According to Fry, Clarkson worked with KDOT and followed federal guidelines to create lane shifts in the Interstate 435 construction zone.

He added the company has a traffic manager and subcontractor on scene everyday, and Clarkson meets with KDOT weekly to ensure the zone is up to standard.

Fry maintained the design isn't the issue. Rather, it's cars zooming through shifting lanes. Police agree.

"When you go through a construction area, you have to pay attention to the roadway, look at the signs, look at the speed limit. If motorists did that, we probably wouldn't have this interview," Overland Park Police Officer John Lacy said.

Overland Park Police will again team up with the Kansas Highway Patrol to cover the three-mile stretch of Interstate 435. The last time the two agencies joined forces to enforce the speed limit, they issued 130 citations in just four hours. The tickets were just for drivers traveling 15 mph above the limit or faster.

"We're going to be out there, and we're going to enforce it," Officer Lacy added.

The agencies have not yet announced a date for the new crackdown on Interstate 435.
