Kansas City man charged in Westport shooting that wounded two men

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Prosecutors filed charges Monday after the latest violent incident in the Westport entertainment district.

Kevon Powell, 20, of Kansas City, is charged in Jackson County Court with two counts of first degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action.

The shooting happened about 2:45 a.m. Saturday in the area of Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue.

An off-duty Kansas City Police officer working for the Westport Entertainment District said he heard an argument near the intersection and then two gunshots, according to court documents.

The officer saw Powell shoot at one of the victims, pulled his gun and told Powell to drop his 9mm handgun.

Powell ran five blocks before being captured by officers.

A handgun was found by officers along the aborted escape route used by Powell.

Detectives talked to both shooting victims.

One said he walked our of a bar, heard gunfire and realized he's been shot in the left leg, court documents state.

The other victim said he was in Westport when he was shot.

Powell requested an attorney and did not give police a statement about the shootings.
