A Kansas City man was sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to scalding a toddler in hot water.

Daniel Rose, 32, was charged with first-degree assault for the incident in March 2013.

According to court documents, Rose was watching the child at a home in the 7600 block of NW Milrey Dr. He told police he noticed a rash on the child and sent a picture to the child’s mother. She rushed home from work and took the toddler to the hospital.

Medical staff treated the child for first and second-degree burns covering more than 20 percent of the child’s body. The emergency room physician told police the injuries were consistent with the child being dunked in hot water.

Police said Rose then changed his story and claimed the child soiled a diaper and fell into the tub as a bath was being drawn.

During the trial, the emergency room physician denied suggestions that the injury was accidental.

Rose must serve at least 85 percent of his 12-year prison sentence before he is eligible for parole.
