INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – An Independence man is in jail for reportedly stabbing another man after an argument over birthday cake.

Ruben Medina, 57, is charged with armed criminal action and first-degree domestic assault.

Court documents say the incident happened Tuesday afternoon in the 2200 block of S. James Downey Rd.

Police arrived on scene to find the victim and a woman in a vehicle outside the home. The victim was going in and out of consciousness and had a large stab wound to his stomach. Police said the woman was so hysterical she was unable to tell them what happened.

The pair was transported to an area hospital. The woman was treated for a panic attack and the victim suffered a puncture wound to the inner wall of his stomach.

At the hospital, the woman was interviewed by police. She said she was Medina’s sister and the victim was her boyfriend.

Medina’s sister told police she had made Medina a birthday cake, but he had started arguing with her boyfriend about who was going to cut the cake.

Court documents say Medina went into the living room to grab a 12-inch knife that was on display, and he used that knife to stab the victim.

Medina admitted to stabbing the victim. He told police he was upset because the cake was made two weeks before his actual birthday. He said the victim had a sarcastic tone with him, so he pulled the knife to scare him. After the stabbing, he went outside to wait for police.

The victim remains in the ICU but is in stable condition.

Medina remains in the Jackson County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
