Everyone loves a picture of a cute dog or cat. That's exactly what won Wayside Waifs some big bucks.

The shelter won first place in the Bayer Animal Health Share for Shelters contest. Bayer presented a check at the shelter Monday morning.

The $15,000 prize will go toward spaying and neutering 3,000 animals that come to the shelter.

Supporters shared nearly 2,500 pictures of their adopted animals on social media and tagged Wayside Waifs.

"Wayside Waifs is so blessed to be in this community of supportive people who are adopters, donors, and volunteers," President Geoff Hall said. "People on Facebook and Twitter shared their adopted pet's story, showing the bond between pets and owners, and it's been really wonderful to watch."

Another KC shelter, Great Plains SPCA, won second place and received $10,000.

Bayer Animal Health is stationed in Kansas City. The company said it had nothing to do with the contest's outcome but it’s happy that the community is such a giving one.
