University of Kansas Health System daily update

Doctors at the University of Kansas Health System said patient numbers "aren't bad" Wednesday.

They said they are treating 112 patients. Sixty of those are suffering from acute infections. Eleven patients are in the ICU, with 10 on ventilators.

Fifty-two patients are in recovery phases.

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) joined the doctors on Wednesday's broadcast.

He said the COVID-19 vaccine is bringing hope that some semblance of "normal" is on the horizon.

"In my view, [the vaccine] is the biggest shot at getting us back to normal, or something closer to normal, that's out there," Moran said. "So I've certainly been promoting the value of getting vaccinated."

Johnson County health department adjusts COVID-19 vaccine site

Health officials in Johnson County, Kansas, are making adjustments after long lines at a vaccine site Tuesday left some seniors waiting outside in the cold.

JCDHE director Dr. Sanmi Areola, apologized "for the discomfort and the inconvenience" at Okun Fieldhouse in Shawnee.

Improvements expected Wednesday included increased parking, traffic control and staffing.

Fewer than 1% of Kansans have received both COVID-19 vaccination doses

As vaccinations across the state continue, data from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment shows that fewer than 1% of the state's residents have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Missouri health department launches COVID-19 vaccine dashboard

The state of Missouri launched a new COVID-19 vaccine dashboard this week, which shows 1.3% of Missourians have received both doses of the vaccine.

How, where to sign up for COVID-19 vaccine in Kansas City area

As Kansas and Missouri move on to new phases in their respective vaccine distribution plans, eligible residents are encouraged to fill out forms in their county to essentially be placed on a waiting list for the vaccine.

University of Kansas Health System opens mass COVID-19 vaccination clinic

The University of Kansas Health System opened a mass vaccination clinic this week.

The hospital's goal is to vaccinate 1,000 people per day.

They started with adults 65 and older this week.

A Lee's Summit health care worker on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic in Tampa received tickets to Super Bowl LV from the NFL.

Kieth Brink said "people at the hospital know I am a Kansas City guy for sure."

Kansas Republicans critical over state's handling of COVID-19 shots

Republican legislators in Kansas say Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly's administration has bungled vaccine rollout, making it more difficult for older Kansans to get vaccinated.

Dr. Lee Norman, secretary of the state's Department of Health and Environment, however, said the problems are due to supply-chain issues with the vaccine.
