Live blog: Kansas tops 500 deaths from COVID-19, Missouri tops 1,800

Updates on the spread of the virus and how it is affecting the metro can be found below for Sept. 10.

4:45 p.m. | The Jackson County Historic Truman Courthouse in Independence is closed due to "several" COVID-19 cases, a county spokesperson said Thursday.

The courthouse, located at 112 W. Lexington Ave., will be closed through Sept. 20 after several employees tested positive for COVID-19. — HG

4:33 p.m. | There were an additional 30 deaths from COVID-19 reported Thursday across Kansas (8) and Missouri (22) — including four across the Kansas City area, two in Johnson County and one each in Wyandotte and Jackson counties.

There have now been 503 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Kansas and 1,804 in Missouri, according to reports from state and local health departments.

Missouri, which remains at a 12.7% positivity rate for the last seven days, also added 1,519 new coronavirus cases — the most since Saturday. —TP

Noon | Beginning next week, the Jackson County Health Department will move COVID-19 testing to five days a week. Next week, testing events will be held in Lee's Summit, Grandview, Grain Valley, Blue Springs and Independence.

11:40 a.m. | On Thursday, Kansas updated its quarantine list, saying it will no longer require those who attend large gatherings out-of-state to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in Kansas.

In a news release, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said those who wear masks and social distance at out-of-state gatherings larger than 500 people will no longer need to quarantine.

“We do not recommend attendance at any type of mass gathering event but recognize that some larger events may take appropriate precautions,” KDHE Secretary Dr. Lee Norman said. “If choosing to attend, people must practice social distancing and wear masks.”

The state's quarantine list now includes:

  • Attendance at any out-of-state mass gatherings of 500 or more where individuals do not socially distance (6 feet) and wear a mask.
  • Traveled to Aruba Aug. 27-Sept. 10.
  • Traveled July 14 – Aug. 27 to countries with a CDC Level 3 Travel Health Notice and restrictions on entry into the United States, including China, Iran, European Schengen area, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and Brazil.
  • Been on a cruise ship or river cruise on or after March 15.

10:04 a.m. | The Kansas Department of Corrections reported a fifth inmate in the facility has died due to COVID-19 related complications.

The inmate had underlying conditions that contributed to his death, the department said. -DM

7:15 a.m. | North Kansas City High School football fans will not be allowed to attend Friday's away-game against Fort Osage due to restrictions in Jackson County, according to David Garrison, NKC Schools athletics director.

However, he said the game will be streamed online. -KB

7 a.m. | Beginning Friday, drive through COVID-19 testing will be available to children 12 and older at CVS pharmacies. The company said they've increased turnaround time to have results back within two or three days. Patients have to register online in advance and must be accompanied by a parent. -KB
