KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Students in the Olathe Public School District participating in "high-risk activities" will be allowed to go to classes in-person through a hybrid model beginning Oct. 19, when Olathe secondary schools begin the model.

The Olathe Board of Education held a special meeting on Wednesday to review the remote learning requirement for high-risk activities and athletics, according to a spokesperson.

The district will continue to use gating criteria from the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment but will also use the absenteeism metric of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

The JCDHE changed its guidelines to no longer include recommendations related to high-risk activities and athletics, according to the district.

Now, if the district continues to follow the JCDHE gating criteria, students who participate in high-risk activities will no longer have to learn in a remote environment.

High-risk activities in schools include sports like football, or extracurricular activities like dance.

On Monday, the district announced nearly 175 student-athletes from the district were in the quarantine due to a possible COVID-19 exposure.

The district also announced both the Olathe South and Olathe Northwest football games would be canceled this week.
