KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former Olathe teacher and Shawnee councilman was sentenced in Johnson County Wednesday in a case stemming from unlawful sexual relations with a student.

Justin Adrian was sentenced to 60 days shock time and 12 months of probation after being found guilty of felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor sexual battery.

If Adrian violates the terms of his probation, he'll be sent to prison for 12 months and serve an additional 36 months of probation.

Adrian was a social studies teacher at Olathe East High School and met a student who was at least 16 years-old on the app Grindr.

According to court records, Adrian knew the teenager was a student but continued conversations, some sexual in nature, with them on Grindr and Snapchat.

The next day, Adrian engaged in a sexual act with the student in a classroom.

It is illegal for a teacher to have a sexual relationship, consensual or not, with a student, though the legal age of consent in Kansas is 16.

Adrian was also formerly a councilman on Shawnee City Council. He resigned from that position in September 2018.
