Jessep Carter was the stepbrother of Kylr Yust and likely to be one of the key witnesses in the murder charges brought against Yust. However, Carter died in his cell at Jackson County Corrections in September 2018 at the age of 32. His death was deemed a suicide.

Carter was in custody on arson charges for a July 13, 2018, house fire. He was alsowith Yust the day that missing woman, Jessica Runions’ car was found burned - which Yust was later charged for. A Henry County deputy pulled Carter over with Yust in his vehicle that day. Carter was accused of fleeing that traffic stop.

Court documents for Yust’s murder charges claim that Carter saw Yust set Runions’ car on fire and that the step-brother drove Yust to a trailer in Edwards, Missouri, where he was later arrested. Carter reportedly called Belton, Missouri, police after dropping Yust off and told them about Yust’s actions and where he was located. He later told 41 Action News he was “not ok” with Yust’s actions.

Carter was also accused of attacking an ex-girlfriend in October 2016.
