Good evening bloggers,

It's Red Friday Night In The Big Town! As the Chiefs prepare to host the AFC Championship game at Arrowhead Stadium in the attempt at winning the Lamar Hunt Trophy for the first time since it was named after their owner, the weather is looking cold, but dry for the game. Between now and then, we have more weather changes.

We had some icing, an airplane slide off of the runway at KCI Airport, some crashes around the city, and some pretty icy scenes around the metro area. Temperatures are now rising above freezing. This warmer air surge will last just a few more hours, and by 4 a.m., a strong cold blast will arrive and new ice formation is possible, if not likely in a few spots.

The pressure gradient, shown in the isobars (lines of equal pressure), is quite strong later tonight, and this will lead to winds gusting to 45 mph by morning. As the temperatures drop, any standing water may refreeze. And, then colder air will settle in for the Chiefs game.

This map above shows the top six coldest kickoffs at Arrowhead Stadium in the past 25 years. Last year's game against New England actually tied for sixth place with another game against Tennessee in December three years ago with 19°. The Chiefs lost that one too. Well, guess what? This losing ends and the Chiefs will win with my prediction 31-17 over the Titans. Which will mean the Chiefs will be going to the Super Bowl.

Here is the forecast for the game day experience. Bundle up!

At least it does look sunny out there! There is a storm showing up later next week, so let's get the win, and we will worry about that storm as Royals Fanfest approaches.

Kansas City Weather Time-Line:

  • Now - 3 AM: A few showers with temperatures rising to near 40 degrees. South winds 10-25 mph
  • 3 AM - 7 AM: A cold blast with high winds arrive. Winds will gust to 45 mph from the north and temperatures will drop below freezing with a few new icy spots
  • Saturday: Windy and colder with some sunshine returning. High: 32°
  • Chiefs Sunday: Cold for tailgaiting and then 23 degrees at kickoff. Go Chiefs!!!!! It will likely be sunny!

Have a great Friday Night In The Big Town!
