An Excessive Heat Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Kansas City metro area on Wednesday. It will go into effect at 11 a.m. and last into the evening hours.

What is an Excessive Heat Warning? This type of warning is issued when heat will reach one of two criteria. A warning will be issued if there is a heat index of at least 105 degrees Fahrenheit for more than three hours per day for two consecutive days, or if the heat index is forecast to be greater than 115 degrees at any time. With the heat we have had so far this week, the National Weather Service decided to issue this warning for Wednesday.

Our weather team at 41 Action Weather Team is forecasting a high temperature near 100 degrees on Wednesday. It has not hit 100 degrees officially at KCI Airport in almost three years. It did not hit 100 degrees the past two summers. We will definitely make a run at it Wednesday. The humidity is still high, so the heat index will be close to 110 degrees.

We suggest that you drink extra water, wear light-colored clothing, check on the elderly, please don’t leave pets outside and try to limit the outdoor activity to earlier in the day. Remember the warning goes into effect at 11 a.m.

A cold front will move through Wednesday night and cooler air will move in Thursday giving us at least a brief break from the extreme heat.
