A Kansas City man faces a federal charge in connection with the death of a man whose body was found alongside a road earlier this week.

Raynal King, 25, is charged with kidnapping resulting in death for his alleged role in the death of Jaime Patton, 28, a staff member in the Belton School District.

According to court documents, Patton was last seen at a local hospital caring for a family member between 5-6 a.m. on Sept. 6. Shortly after leaving the hospital, he called his wife and asked for the PIN to their debit card.

Investigators said there were several failed attempts to use Patton’s debit card at different ATMs that morning. At one of those ATMs, surveillance video allegedly caught King driving Patton’s vehicle, with another man in the back seat and Patton sitting on the passenger side with his hands on the dashboard.

After King was identified in that video, he was taken into custody by police in a traffic stop.

King told police he was on his front porch that morning when Patton’s car pulled up. He said when he looked inside, he saw Patton in the passenger seat with his palms on the dashboard. King said the man driving the vehicle had a gun in his lap pointed at Patton.

Court documents don’t identify the man driving Patton’s vehicle.

King told police the driver asked for his help, so he got in the driver’s seat while the other man got into the back seat.

Court documents say King drove to several locations where he tried to use Patton’s debit card to access an ATM. King says at one point the other man fired the gun at Patton, who was able to jump out of the vehicle.

According to court documents, King says he slowed the vehicle down and saw Patton lying in the street, but the other man told him to keep driving.

The pair reportedly went back to King’s home, switched vehicles and drove to a 7-Eleven to try Patton’s debit card again. The attempts failed.

Patton’s body was found along the roadway in the 13700 block of Holmes Rd. around 6:30 a.m.

King remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing.

The Belton School District released the following statement after Patton's death:

Jaime Patton, Technology Department Technician, was a well-loved colleague in the Belton School District family.  He was selected as the Technology Support Staff Member of the Year in 2016.  Jaime started with the district in the fall of the 2012 school year, and was known for having a calm and reassuring demeanor, instilling trust in all of his work relationships.  Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
