DAY 3

It was Michael Andrew's fastest swim yet in the 100 meter breast stroke Monday night at Olympic team trials. Unfortunately, it just wasn't fast enough to qualify for the Olympic games in Rio.

Michael finished fourth in what was always going to be a tough race. First place finisher Kevin Cordes even set an American record in the semi finals. Only the top two swimmers are Rio bound.

Michael now says he'll swim the other races he has at trials feeling totally free.

"I know I did everything I could and it was the best time, so I'm happy," Michael said.

"Its a real victory," said his father and coach, Peter Andrew.  "He just turned 17. He's a baby. You know? I mean four years time, he's going to come back."

"I'm actually happy especially for Kevin," said Michael. "It was a pleasure to race with him."

Bobby Bollier, Shannon Vreeland & Emma Reaney are local swimmers swimming their events on Tuesday.

DAY 2

We're watching three Kansas City swimmers who will be in close contention for Rio Monday.

Day two of Olympic trials in Omaha will start with preliminary heats with stars like olympian Missy Franklin hitting the pool.

Michael Andrew, 17, of Lawrence, is making heads turn heading into finals Monday night. Originally seeded 11th in the 100-meter breaststroke, he cut his time breaking his own national age group record and finished fifth in prelims. He kept the momentum going in semifinals Sunday night finishing fourth and earning a spot in finals.

Will he qualify for Rio? He'll need to finish in the top two.

Emma Reaney from Lawrence will swim in the 100-meter breaststroke preliminary heats Monday morning. She is seeded eighth and believes this event could be her ticket to Rio. The top-16 finishers will move on to semifinals Monday night.

Shannon Vreeland, returning after winning a gold medal in the London 2012 Olympics, will swim the 400 meter freestyle Monday morning. She calls it more of a warmup for the 200-meter freestyle that begins Tuesday. That is the race that put her on the 2012 Olympic team.

Preliminary heats begin at 10 a.m. Monday. Finals and semi finals begins at 7 p.m. Monday.

DAY 1

A Kansas City swimmer will fight for the chance to go to Rio on Sunday night.

Michael Andrew, 17, from Lawrence, Kansas, will swim in the semi-finals for the 100 meter breaststroke.

He came in fifth in the morning preliminary heats, cutting down his time to under one minute and potentially breaking two records.

Andrew had just broken the 17-18 National Age Group record for 100 meter breast stroke last weekend in the same Omaha pool where almost 1,800 swimmers are vying for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. About 50 will be chosen.

The top two in most events make the cut. Sometimes the difference between going to the Olympics and staying home means winning by one hundredth of a second or as one official put it, winning by a fingernail.

Andrew could qualify for finals on Sunday by more than that given his morning performance and fifth place finish. He will need to finish in the top eight tonight to continue on to the 100 meter breast stroke finals Monday night.

His time of 59.96 also meant he unofficially broke a junior world record. It still needs to be confirmed by swimming officials.

UPDATE:

Andrew shaved his time again and is now just one swim from the Rio Olympics. He finished fourth in the men's 100 meter breaststroke semifinals qualifying him for finals Monday night.
