A storm system is approaching the area and severe thunderstorms are possible Wednesday. Severe weather season picks up in late March and April, and then peaks in May into early June. We are now moving into that time of the year and we are recommending everyone to practice their severe weather plan.

On Wednesday there is a chance that a Tornado Watch will be issued later in the day. A Tornado Watch is different from a Tornado Warning. A watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms, and then if any do develop, severe weather is then possible in your area.

A severe thunderstorm is defined to have one of three parameters associated with it: wind gusts of 50 knots (58 mph or stronger), hail 1" in diameter (the size of a quarter) or larger or a tornado.

You can practice your tornado safety plan with your family now.

  1. The safest spot is the lowest level, center part, and smallest room of your house.
  2. If you have a basement, this is where you would go, otherwise a bathroom or a closet in the middle of your house.
  3. Have some supplies in there, such as a flashlight, a weather radio, some food and bottled water.

Our weather team is monitoring this setup closely. We will keep you updated as this storm and other spring storm systems approach our area.
